Kwame Gyan writes: Giovani’s Adult Content delivers as promised

It was themed Adult Content, and each person that held the microphone on the night had clearly received the memo, understood the memo, and prepared to deliver per the memo. The event was what organizer, Giovani Caleb had described it as an ‘intimate comedy and music experience for couples and singles’ and that was just what it turned out to be.

Yes, attendance was not great, but the audience no doubt had a very good laugh as the comedians (and comedienne) and Kwan Pa Band delivered absolutely hilarious material, most of which they hadn’t used before until Friday February 15. There was never a dull moment at the Silverbird Cinemas and whoever was there can attest to this.

Giovani Caleb is also a Comedian please

One of the opening acts remarked after Giovani had welcomed guests that ‘I thought you were the emcee but this one that it is doing like you want to take our jobs…’. Dude was funny on the night and he could have easily been assumed to be on the bill as a comedian too. Indeed, if you know Giovani, you’d know he is a naturally funny guy and this to me was a premiere to show this side of him.

Kwan Pa Band

My first time hearing the 4 man band play and I was thrilled by their dexterity in playing both contemporary and old hilife tunes using the palm wine music style. They dazzled the audience with Ama Amponsah just the same way they did with Shatta Wale’s My Level. Their interaction with the audience was an endearing part of their act and it makes sense why they have become famous quite quickly.

Jacinta is now a Doctor

Yes please. She heals all sorts of ailments and has a cure that most men cannot say no to. Gosh she nailed that joke. I mean you look at how innocent she tried to look, tie it up with her fake ‘I am a good, innocent girl who can’t hurt a fly’ voice and the words that came out of her mouth did not quite much the absolutely hilarious Jacinta we saw. It is very very clear that this woman likes the tin paaa…i meant she likes jokes about the distin paaaa. I think it was the best I have seen Jacinta perform.

Lekzy De Comic is growing…. Just not taller

When you keep putting in the work and taking advice and working on your craft, you simply get better. Lekzy has been growing steadily and it was evident with his co-hosting role which meant that he got breaks in between his acts. Picking on everyday occurances, he got the audience in stitches each time he was in the mic. I say again, these boys and girl are just natural with sex jokes.

Teacher Kwadwo… Yedinn wo ho

Here is the thing with this Primary 4 teacher – he is a naturally funny guy and does so very effortlessly. If you thought he was only good with putting videos together and speaking deep Twi, you got it wrong. His stand up is just as on point and he did so beautifully combining Twi and English. He started off deceiving us that the next line in a joke he was giving required us to be quiet….except that we didn’t need to be quiet. The ‘yedinn’ part and how he said them every time simply had some of us sprawling on our seats.

OB Amponsah’s 3 types of distin

Shower. Grower. Nothing. They are the 3 types of distins for men. Now it is not just the types that was hilarious but how he described them. OB kept on delivering one deft punchline after another and when you think he is done, then another drops. His love affair with the people of Kumasi was also on steroids on the night. Just like his colleagues on the night, he felt very comfortable and seemed to be having a lot of fun, and it was exciting watching them bring so much laughter out of an audience that did not seem to expect this sort of fun.

Curtain Raisers showed Class

There is a very deliberate effort by the now known comedians to create the platform for new ones to flourish. Often when they have their shows, the have these new lads to open the shows and did they deliver on the night! I have listened to some before, but a couple, I only saw last Friday. The first was PJay. Second was Ranzy. Next was Teekay and the last was MJ the comedian. They took hold of the opportunity and delivered very beautifully. They are names to look out for to join the current stars made up of Lekzy, OB, Jacinta, Teacher Kwadwo, Khemikal, DKB, Foster, ID James Brown, etc.

Time of Show and Silverbird

The timing of the show, 5.30pm on a Friday that was a working day meant that patrons who would have liked to show up could not make it because it was too soon after close of work and traffic leading to the Accra Mall area was as always, legendary. Perhaps the folks at the Silverbird Cinema could not free the auditorium any other time than what was alloted.

Come to think of it, it will be an awesome idea if Silverbird adds some other entertainment event aside the movies they show. Accra can be boring and one-way-ish and an alternative like what happened last Friday served as a good one. Indeed, some folks caught a movie after the comedy show and that can only be good for Silverbird.

Supporters and Sponsors needed

It was good to see a number of companies support the event. That’s the way to go although Giovani and other event organizers will tell you, yes support us but adding some cash will be super helpful. Paying for venue, artists, photographers etc comes at great cost. I got to know that there is a local outfit (Odo Asem) that distributes sex related accouterments, and here I mean all kinds of stuff that can spice your sex life. There was also a condom brand (Unidus) that does a little more than just protection. I also had some exciting cocktails from GIHOC which I didn’t know existed. You know those cocktails that do not leave you hangover and also does not leave that irritating odour in your mouth – that type.
