World-renowned South African trumpeter, singer, composer & human rights advocate, Hugh Masekela, would be 80 years old today if he was alive.
Hugh was born in the town of Witbank, South Africa in 1939.
Hugh used his global reach to spread the word about heritage restoration in Africa – a topic that remained very close to his heart.
He is known for the popular quote: “My biggest obsession is to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are.”
Masekela confided – It was this commitment to his home continent that propelled him forward since he first began playing the trumpet.
He has composed great songs like ‘Grazing in the Grass,’ ‘Bring Him Back Home,’ ‘Don’t Go Loose it Baby,’ ‘Mama’, among others.
The legendary South African jazz musician Hugh passed away on January 23, 2018 from prostate cancer which he has been battling since 2008.
