Recording and dedicating songs which are insulting (beef/diss songs) to artistes is one culture that is really known in the showbiz world.
Although at times it is staged act to get attention and money, this act which is called ‘beef’ is a strategy used to get relevance, be in the news, launch one’s dead music career or to even start it in the first place.
But the very reason which is recognized with beef is artistes using it to address differences.
There have been times where artiste go to the studio and waste time and beat to record a diss song to another artiste but have not been replied, no matter how far they took the matter to get their attention.
One of such artistes who is known to usually pretend he has not heard such songs targeted at him is the rapper, Sarkodie.
In an interview with KSM, he has explained why he has not wasted his breath to reply some of the beef songs directed at him.
When KSM asked his take on ‘beef’ and what will make him beef another artiste, he explained that he will only beef when it will blow his career.
“M,e the reason why it’s hard for me to start the beef is because what do I gain in this situation? If I have to beef you, we have to 50/50. I need to win as well. So I said in a song if you want me to beef you, you need to come and pay…because if I look at the situation, what do I gain out of it?.
“If you give me somebody that’ll go toe to toe and I’ll win, it’ll be a win-win for me and like who is it going to be? If you look around and go like if I have to go toe to toe with somebody and then I’ll win as well. It’s not going to change anything about Sarkodie but if maybe somebody out there who wants to do it then I go back and forth and it can take me to the next level, then yes I’ll look out to it but if it’s not gonna do anything…”
He added that ‘beef’ is not a culture that is going to end anytime soon.
“So it’s never going to go away especially in a male-dominated industry where egos are in there.
“ Me first and foremost if you go at me I’ll not let you let it slide like that. Sometimes you’ll get some punch or one or two” he said
In 2018, Sarkodie released his three (3) minutes six (6) seconds diss song directed at Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale and that has not been replied till date and just before 2019 came to an end, he released a new song titled ‘Oofeetso’ which features Prince Bright.
This new one as well has been rumoured to be directed at Shatta Wale which Prince Bright debunked in an interview with Sammy Flex.
Back in 2017, Quata Budukusu tried recording more than one diss song to Sarkodie, one in which he was teaching him how to do the tongue twist kind of rap and another which he called ‘Death to Sark’ but got no reply.
