Ecow Smith Asante says Ghanaian politicians kill themselves to get into power

Ghanaian actor, Ekow Smith Asante has attributed non-performance by political figures to the sacrifices they make to gain power, which rather end in debt.

According to him, political aspirants go to all lengths just so they get voted into office and after winning, they find themselves looting and embezzling to pay back debts and forget about the electorates in the process.

In an interview on 3FM with MzGee, he talked about how actors resort to preaching, politics and catering because the movie industry is not flourishing.

While making references to the actors who switched professions, he mentioned John Dumelo who is contesting for Ayawaso West Wuogon on the ticket of NDC.

When MzGee asked him what he thinks about John Dumelo’s political ambition, he described John as daring adding that “once he wants to serve, let him serve but I’m just against the whole total package of Ghanaian politics, African politics of how you have to virtually do everything within your power, vice or virtue to win power. You’re going to serve. Why should you kill yourself to serve? If the people say we don’t want you to serve us, that one too is it by force?

“But the way we kill ourselves to get into power is what I don’t get but I appreciate his daring attitude”

MzGee then asked him what he meant by ‘killing ourselves’ and he replied by saying “You know how Ghanaian politics are, they’d do all means, pay all the monies, when it’s getting to elections time, take all the rice to the masses, the t-shirts, the oil, ‘bentoa’ and things all to win one vote and when you finish you don’t take care of the people because, in their mind, they have been catered for already. So, we need to take care of ourselves.

“So we burden the political aspirants so much so they have to go through whatever means, go get all the monies either from dubious means or from fair means, we don’t know and then come and give it to you. So, when he comes he’s owing people so he has to also pass corner to make money”

He confirmed he is affiliated to a political party but would not make it publicly known unless he is paid $10 million which he doubts can be given to him.
