The 2011 Ghana Most Beautiful queen, Akua Amoakowaa popularly known as Akua said she used to steal sugarcane and fetch water for people to survive.
While recounting how she grew from a not-well-to-do background, she feels the reason the rich exploit the poor is that they want to remain rich.
“…so I’ll go to the sugarcane farm, buy my sugarcane and sometimes steal some. That’s what we do,” she noted.
According to her, her family lived on the meagre income from her father’s plumbing job which was barely paid for adding that “…there were times that we could actually sleep on the empty belly because there was no food in the house and then my mom went about buying things on credit. It got to a time that nobody will give us stuff on credit because obviously we couldn’t make money to pay for them.”
She told Stacy on Restoration that she had to go to school with a polythene bag and a patched uniform.
“…so he will go and work and they won’t pay him and we the kids have to actually suffer for that”
She clarified that is a contributing factor to why she barely dresses to look ‘wealthy’ to see how people will treat her without knowing her status.
“I’m somebody who doesn’t go out all dressed up because I want to see the reception you give me when I am in that state and then if you don’t give me a good reception and you get to know who I am, don’t come and pretend. I don’t take that. It means when I was in that state, if you had seen me in that time you would’ve disrespected me. I don’t need your respect because you know who I am,” she stated.
She added that she is where she is now because of the prayers she said then, the help of Mr Yamoah the headmaster of Kings and Queens International school- he paid her fees to complete Junior High School.
