Ghanian actor, Van Vicker has called for a change in the mode of distribution of food and other relief items to the poor and needy during the lockdown.
As a way to curb the spread of the coronavirus, most of the affected countries have adopted the initiative of restriction of movement in order to observe social distancing.
Since the president, Nana Addo Dunkwa Akufo-Addo pronounced the lockdown of Greater Accra and Kumasi effective March 30 and a one-week extension, groups of people, individuals, and the government have taken on the duty of feeding the less fortunate in some areas of the country.
For instance, Kayayes are being fed hot meals twice a day while individuals also go around communities distributing food items to people to keep them at home, solve their hunger issues and prevent the spread of the disease.
However, videos that have surfaced on the internet and on the news show the order of social distancing and avoidance of unnecessary body contacts are thrown out of the window as people rush for the food items.
In an Instagram post, Van Vicker said although the distribution of such items is an excellent initiative, “we might want to reconsider the food distribution method which seems to defeat the whole purpose of the exercise. It defeats social distancing, it defeats people gathering with no mask. It is rather promoting the spread of the virus, essentially. Extremely disquieting”
He shared his opinion alongside a video from the Voice Of America TV Chanel (VOA) in which men in uniform move door to door distributing food items as opposed to the situation seen in the Ghanaian videos.
