Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has said she is disappointed in the comparison made by the Vice president concerning Dumsor under Mahama administration and Nana Addo’s way of fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
In a recent presser, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stated that an economy is tested in times of crisis in order to tell its ” robustness”.
Due to that, he compared how the ex-president Mahama dealt with Dumsor under his leadership to the measures the current government has put in place as far as the coronavirus pandemic is concerned.
The Ministry of Health shared a video of the vice president in which he said, “If you want to test the robustness of an economy, you test it in a time of crisis. Thankfully, we have had two crisis. Under the NDC there was an internally generated crisis which was Dumsor. Under the presidency of Nana Akuffo-Ado, there’s been an externally generated crisis which is being the global coronavirus pandemic. I just want you to ask yourselves how have these two crises been managed?
“The Dumsor crisis which crippled this economy for four years. What were the mitigating measures offered to businesses and individuals during Dumsor? This was an internally generated crisis. We saw that even during Dumsor electricity prices were been increased, fuel prices were been increased, teacher training allowances were been cancelled, nursing training allowances were… all of that was happening during that particular crisis.”
“You look at the coronavirus crisis and you look at the difference in terms of what has happened. President has reduced electricity prices, made it free for lifeline consumers, has given free water for all Ghanaians for three months. Has made sure that there is a stimulus package of GHS600 million for businesses and we have seen domestic production of personal protective equipment for our health workers, locally. So, the difference couldn’t be more stuck between the leadership under a crisis under Dumsor and that under the coronavirus pandemic[sic] so I ask a simple question: who will you trust in a time of crisis? The answer I’ll say is very very clear, Nana Addo Dunkwa Akuffo-Ado has shown leadership and concern for ordinary Ghanaians” the vice president noted.
However Lydia Forson “can’t believe we’re comparing DUMSOR to COVID-19, a pandemic that threatens our very human existence.”
She added that “I’m utterly disgusted and extremely disappointed by this comparison.”
She further opined that the minister for information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah would not let a statement as this slide if he were still a journalist.
“@konkrumah I know if you were still on air you would have grilled anyone who made this statement. smh,” she said.
