Musician Sister Derby has urged people of colour to call out their white friends on racist remarks.
She said this in a tweet while joining the #BlackOutTuesday with a black image to mark solidarity in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
She used the opportunity to recount an experience she had with a white friend years ago and how she handled it.
“Pls call out your white friends when they are being racist. A white 18 year old girl once said to me about my friend – looking at her picture – “She’s too dark, she’s ugly.” I told her she was racist because she called my friend ugly just because she was black.
“Meanwhile my friend is extremely pretty and dark. She was ashamed of course. I will continue to address her racism if/when I meet her again. Sia” she tweeted.
