Ghanaian actress and the founder of the Black Star International Film Festival, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante has described as “difficult” the things one goes through while having a divorce in Ghana.

In a Facebook post, Juliet wrote that going through a divorce as a woman in Ghana is difficult because other women will just make life uncomfortable for you.

She wrote: “As a woman who has gone through a divorce in this country before… I can say for certain…

IT IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS TO DO IN GHANA 🇬🇭
And it is the WOMEN…
– it is the women who will not support you
– it is the women who will gossip and also be happy in their hearts that it didn’t work
– it is the women who will make and spread allegations
– it is the women who will make you feel that marriage is the ultimate
– it is the women who will…
Let’s have the difficult conversations… 🤔 then maybe the real needle movement we seek will begin?.”

Her statement comes at a time most Ghanaians are advising women in toxic and abusive marriages to leave before they are killed or traumatized.

The recent death of a woman by name of Lilian Dedjoe and the circumstances surrounding it has actually engendered these debates.

Reports say there had been misunderstandings between Lilian and her husband Charles Dedjoe and on March 1, 2021, there was another one that resulted in the man assaulting his wife. She sustained injuries and was rushed to the Madina Polyclinic.

She returned home but there was no improvement. She was later rushed to the Lister hospital in a coma and pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the investigator, the accused [the husband] has admitted assaulting the deceased with his slippers and Post-Mortem is yet to be carried out on the deceased.

The case has been adjourned to March 22, 2021.
