Oscar- and Emmy-nominee Taraji P. Henson will star as Shug Avery in Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple.”
The forthcoming Warner Brothers movie is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, which is an adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel.
The production is directed by Bazawule, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black is King,” “The Burial of Kojo” and “Cherish the Day.”
Marcus Gardley wrote the screenplay, based on Alice Walker’s novel, the 1985 Warner Brothers Pictures film, and the stage musical.
Reacting to Taraji’s feature on Facebook, Blitz wrote: “Soooo excited to have the INCREDIBLE Taraji P. Henson join our cast as Shug Avery in the upcoming ‘The Color Purple Musical’ for Warner Brothers. This is going to be something special. Can’t wait!!!!”
