Popular radio show host and musician, Blakk Rasta, has condemned organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), tagging the entire scheme as useless compared to the controversial Global Leadership Service to Humanity Awards organized by Kwame Fordjour aka Dr. UN.
According to Blakk Rasta, the procedure for the selection of VGMA winners based on monetized SMS public voting is flawed and only beneficial to persons with the highest budgets.
Blakk Rasta sees Dr UN’s scheme as more credible since persons honoured do not go through the process of competing for votes to become the ultimate winners.
“His awards will even be better than the VGMA which is a useless award. This VGMA is a useless award because people are voting. They are buying votes and that is corrupt… Dr UN was asked why he didn’t nominate me and he said Blakk Rasta was bigger than my awards…the point is this when VGMA is making their awards, you have to vote. When you vote, they give it to the highest bidder, the one who votes more.
“They are not even ashamed of it, they will ask you, ‘did you vote?’. You didn’t win and you are crying. So did you buy the awards? Dr UN didn’t do that, he just pinpointed people in the society he felt with his panelist that these people deserved this award, and they awarded them, that is how an award system should go…I will prefer Dr UN’s award to VGMA any day,” he added.
Yesterday, Blakk Rasta revealed that he worked with Dr. UN between 1997 and 2001 at a radio station while they were both students of the university.
“He was my mate, and he was at Katanga Hall, officially called University Hall. In fact, he was also a radio presenter, and I was playing reggae there. I finished in 2001, so this was in 1997. I met him there, the long and short of it all is, he was my mate,” he said.
