Black Sherif, the reigning VGMA Artiste of the Year, was surprisingly snubbed in the 2023 BET Awards nominations.

However, Ghanaian Afrobeat sensation Camidoh made history as the only Ghanaian artiste to earn a  nomination. He was nominated in the “Best New International Act” category.

In response to questions about why the ‘Sugarcane’ crooner was nominated for the BET Awards instead of Black Sherif, Camidoh’s manager, George Britton, explained that the scheme’s committee now considers factors such as an artist’s international reach and popularity when making their nominations.

Camidoh’s song “Sugarcane” has been well-received in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world, which may have contributed to his nomination.

George Britton, who was speaking to Ghana Weekend, said that Black Sherif was nominated in the “HIp Hop artiste of the year” category last year, so he could not be nominated in the “New Artiste of the Year” category this year.

Ghana Weekend’s Take

Black Sherif and Camidoh are two of the most exciting new artists in Africa. Both artists have released a string of hit songs that have captured the attention of audiences across the continent.

Black Sherif’s breakout single “Second Sermon” was a massive hit in Ghana, and his follow-up single “Kwaku the Traveller” has been even more successful. Camidoh’s song “Sugarcane” has also been a major hit, and he has been praised for his unique blend of Afrobeats and dancehall.

Both artists are still relatively new to the music industry, but they have already made a significant impact. They are both talented and hardworking, and they have the potential to be stars on the global stage.

Here are some specific examples of the success that they have already achieved:

  • Black Sherif won the Artiste of the Year award at the 2023 VGMAs.
  • Camidoh was nominated for the “Best New International Act” category at the 2023 BET Awards.
  • Both artists have had their songs featured on major streaming platforms, such as Spotify and Apple Music.
  • Both artists have toured across Africa and have performed at major music festivals.
  • Both artists have collaborated with other popular artists, such as Burna Boy and Sarkodie.
  • Camidoh is currently out with a mixtape dubbed ‘LITA’
