Ghanaian singer Haruna Mohammed Buhari, better known by his stage name Nanky, has said that it is time for polygamy to be accepted in Ghanaian society.
Nanky, who won the Best Unsung Artist award at the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, argued that polygamy is a better alternative to having side chicks, which can lead to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and even murder.
“I advise men to marry multiple women depending on their tastes and financial situation,” he said. “This will help to reduce the number of side chicks, which can lead to the spread of STDs and even murder.”
Nanky cited the example of the police inspector Ahmed Twumasi, who killed his side chick in the Ashanti Region in 2022. He said that if the inspector had been married to multiple women, he would not have felt the need to have a side chick, and the murder would not have happened.
Nanky’s comments have been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised him for speaking out about an issue that is often taboo in Ghanaian society, while others have criticized him for promoting polygamy.
It remains to be seen whether Nanky’s comments will have any impact on public opinion on polygamy in Ghana. However, his comments have certainly sparked a debate about the issue.
