I acted without being paid – Veteran actress of ‘Obra’ fame Janet Ackom cries

Veteran actress from the popular Ghanaian TV series ‘Obra’ and ‘Osofo Dadzie’, Janet Ackom has spoken about her struggles in the early days of her acting career.

She revealed that she and many others were not paid much for their work and had to bear the financial burden of their families.

Despite the lack of money, they were passionate about the craft and continued to work hard. Ackom shared her experiences on Joy Prime’s ‘Prime Morning’ show with Roselyn Felli.

When asked about how it felt to be a celebrity without much financial stability, Ackom said that people assumed they had money, but in reality, they struggled to make ends meet.

They had to wear the same dress to different events and had to rely on commercial transport, known as ‘trotro’, for their transportation needs.

Ackom acknowledged that acting was her only source of income, and she loved the craft too much to give it up. She started her acting career in 1975 and joined the ‘Obra’ team in the 90s, becoming one of the show’s most popular characters.

Unlike some of her colleagues, who received gifts such as lands and properties from fans, Ackom never received any such gifts. Despite the hardships, she continued to act and never gave up on her passion.

‘Obra’ was a popular TV series in Ghana in the 1980s and 2000s, offering an entertaining and educational mix of drama, fun, and life lessons.

Although the series has been halted for some time due to undisclosed circumstances, it continues to have a place in the hearts of Ghanaians.
