The President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, has declared an afternoon day off for all Batswana and residents on Friday, August 9th, 2024, to celebrate the historic achievement of Letsile Tebogo, fondly known as “Botswana’s Sensation.”

Letsile Tebogo recently made history as the first Motswana and the first African to win a gold medal in the 200m event at the Olympics.

This remarkable achievement has captured the hearts of millions, and President Masisi has found it a fitting tribute to honour Tebogo’s outstanding performance by granting the nation this special day of celebration.

In his address to the nation, President Masisi highlights the significance of Tebogo’s victory, describing it as an achievement that deserves recognition and celebration on a national scale. “Letsile’s performance is not just a victory for him, but for all of Botswana and Africa.

His dedication, hard work, and excellence have brought pride to our nation, and it is only right that we pause to celebrate him in a manner that will be remembered for generations,” President Masisi stated.

The President also extended his heartfelt congratulations to Letsile Tebogo, expressing gratitude to his late mother for her role in shaping the athlete’s journey to greatness. “On behalf of the entire nation, I applaud Letsile and give unceasing thanks to his late mother, whose influence and support were instrumental in his success,” President Masisi added.

As the nation comes together to celebrate this historic moment, the President’s declaration ensures that August 9th, 2024, will be a day etched in the annals of Botswana’s history, marked by pride, unity, and a collective sense of accomplishment.

The announcement has been met with widespread enthusiasm across the country, with many expressing their excitement to join in the celebrations and honour the country’s newest national hero.
