Reggae icon Buju Banton has stunned fans and ignited a cultural conversation by revealing his Igbo heritage.

In an interview on the Drink Champs podcast, the Jamaican singer shared the groundbreaking discovery that his Maroon ancestry can be traced back to the Igbo people of Nigeria.

Beyond his ancestral revelations, Banton sounded the alarm about a critical issue facing his homeland. He expressed grave concern over the Jamaican government’s decision to allow Chinese and other foreign entities to encroach upon the sacred Cockpit region, the ancestral home of the Maroon people.

This incursion, Banton warns, threatens to displace the Maroon community and obliterate their invaluable cultural legacy.

He passionately declared, “Our Indigenous way of life and our land are under attack. The government’s actions are a direct assault on the Maroons, and by extension, our entire cultural heritage.”
