2024 World Folklore Day marked in Accra

The National Folklore Board, under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, celebrated the 2024 World Folklore Day on Thursday, August 22.

World Folklore is celebrated on August 22 every year in countries around the World

The National Folklore Board is the Statutory agency in Ghana responsible for the administration, registration, promotion and protection of Ghanaian folklore as well as the implementation of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of which Ghana is a signatory.

Folklore or intangible culture refers to ways we express our culture which includes Foodways, Music, dance, art, designs, names, symbols and signs, performances, ceremonies, architectural forms, handicrafts and narratives, languages or any artistic cultural expressions.

This Year’s celebration which is with the theme: Relevance of Traditional Symbols in the 21st Century’ was held at the National Theatre.

Activities to mark this year’s celebration included the Launch of the Ga Samai book written by Dr Richard Afutu Kotei, Free distribution of Ga Samai branded exercise books and display of the Ga Samai collection.

The event which was eloquently moderated by Ahuma Bosco Ocansey of MUSIGA, was attended by dignitaries including the  MUSIGA President Bessa Simons, Mrs Bernice Ann Deh-Kumah, Executive Director of the National Folklore Board, Mr Geoffrey Tamakloe, Representative of the Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Mr Carl Ampah, UNESCO office in Accra,
Mr Apollonius Asare, Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Board Members of the National Folklore Board present, Nii Ahene Numoo III, Abola Mantse and Paramount Chief of Abola traditional Area, Representative of the Ga Mantse, Nii Kwao Donkor II
