Gov’t has not invested even GH¢1 in the NFA fund – Akofa Edjeani

Veteran Ghanaian actress Akofa Edjeani has expressed her frustration over the government’s lack of commitment to the establishment of the Creative Arts Fund meant to provide financial support for the country’s film industry.

Speaking at the 3Entertainment Creative Arts forum on Friday, August 30, Akofa Edjeani, who is also a board member of the National Film Authority (NFA), bemoaned that although the Creative Arts Act 935 mandates the creation of a fund, the NFA is yet to receive any funding since its five years of operation.

“The National Film Authority (NFA), of which I’m a board member, has been operating for about five years now, and in the Act 935 that we are working with, there is supposed to be a fund established for five years. We have not even had one Cedi in that fund,” she said.

She pointed out that the film sector is overlooked while sports, which is also a kind of entertainment, receive significant financial support.

“We care more about sports and other things. Yes, sports are great, but sports is also entertainment. You can plan for sports and spend $15 million for catering for the All-African Games in under three weeks, and you can’t put even a million in the film fund?” she questioned.

Edjeani called for more investment in the NFA while emphasising the potential of the film industry to create jobs and generate significant revenue for the country.

“If you look at what film can do for this country, the creative industry, in totality what it can do, the jobs it can create, the revenue it can rake in. I don’t know why they are not telling the truth,” she said.
