Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, affectionately known as “Mama G,” has been bestowed with an honorary doctorate degree in Theatre and Media Arts from the Achievers Network Academy in the United Kingdom.

This honour recognizes her extraordinary contributions to Nollywood and African cinema over several decades.

The 66-year-old actress was honoured at a ceremony hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Saturday, November 30, 2024. A host of celebrities, friends, and family attended the event. Alongside Ozokwo, Yoruba actors Adebayo Salami and Jide Kosoko were also celebrated for their iconic roles in the industry.

Expressing her joy on Instagram, Ozokwo shared, “Today was like a movie. Honorary Doctorate Degree. Thank you, UNILAG. Thank you.”

The honorees were acknowledged for their instrumental role in elevating Nollywood to global prominence. Their enduring legacy includes iconic performances, mentorship of emerging talent, and the promotion of African culture through the medium of film.

Ozokwo, a pioneer in Nollywood, embarked on her career as a radio announcer before achieving widespread recognition with her role in the 1999 film “Authority.” With over 100 films to her credit, she has delivered unforgettable performances in classics such as “Ukwa” (2001), “Blood Sister” (2003), and “Billionaires Club” (2003).
