President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the achievements of the Year of Return and Beyond the Return initiatives.
In ahis final State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered to Parliament on Monday, January 3, 2025, the president said these programmes revitalised Ghana’s tourism industry, redefined Ghana’s image, and deepened ties with the African diaspora.
The president also said the programmes have positioned Ghana as a beacon of cultural heritage and economic opportunity on the African continent.
The programmes were launched to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia.
Speaking with a tone of pride and accomplishment, President Akufo-Addo reflected on the profound impact of the initiatives.
“Mr. Speaker, in tourism, the Year of Return in 2019 and Beyond the Return initiatives attracted over 1.5 million visitors. These campaigns not only boosted our economy but also strengthened ties with the African diaspora, positioning Ghana as a premier destination for cultural heritage and investment.”
The launch of the programmes garnered unprecedented global attention, drawing tourists, celebrities, entrepreneurs, and dignitaries from around the world. Prominent figures such as Steve Harvey, Naomi Campbell, Boris Kodjoe, and Idris Elba visited Ghana, bringing with them media coverage that highlighted the nation’s beauty, history, and cultural richness.
