Stonebwoy removed from NDC Victory Concert lineup following grassroots pressure

Reggae/Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has been removed from the list of performers in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Victory Concert scheduled for Sunday, January 5, 2025.

This last-minute decision follows mounting criticism from the NDC’s grassroots and supporters, who expressed strong opposition to Stonebwoy’s inclusion in the celebratory event.

The reigning Telecel Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year was announced as one of the headlining performers for the concert.

Stonebwoy’s inclusion on the list of performing artistes was expected to generate excitement but rather sparked controversy, with the hashtag #DropStonebwoy trending on social media within hours of the announcement.

A wave of party supporters voiced their displeasure, arguing that Stonebwoy’s inclusion was inappropriate due to his perceived lack of alignment with the party’s ideology and his alleged dealings with other political entities.

Critics argued that the Victory Concert should exclusively feature artistes who demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the NDC during the campaign season.

A segment of the supporters argued that Stonebwoy had not visibly supported the party during its campaign and questioned the message his inclusion might send about the party’s values.

In response to the backlash, the organisers of the event issued an official statement on Friday evening, confirming that Stonebwoy had been removed from the lineup.

“The organisers of the Ghana Victory Concert, responding to public sentiment and concerns from the party’s grassroots regarding Stonebwoy’s inclusion, have decided to remove the artist from the concert lineup. We sincerely apologize to all members of the National Democratic Congress, particularly the grassroots, for what may have appeared to be a lack of discretion on the part of the organisers,” the statement partly read.

Below is the organisers statement.
