On behalf of the culture and creative community, the Ghana Culture Forum (GCF) wishes to extend heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP) on her nomination as the Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Designate. We take great pride in your remarkable journey and fully support your candidacy put forth by the President. We are confident that your nomination will soon receive favourable consideration from the Parliament of Ghana following your vetting process.
Your longstanding commitment to Ghana’s cultural and creative landscape, beginning with your training in theatre arts, has made you an invaluable contributor to our sector. It is evident that your transition into the political arena was motivated by your genuine concern for the state of the culture and creative sector. Your dedication to advocacy and cultural activism has fostered collaboration within our community, and we have appreciated your engagement both before and during your political career.
As a passionate creative individual who possesses a deep understanding of our sector, we believe that you carry significant insights that will aid in advancing our collective goals. The effective leadership you provide will be paramount as we move forward. We believe that your success as Minister will be largely influenced by two critical elements: the systems in place and the individuals steering those systems. The agenda for the cultural sector is forward- looking, and we trust that both the machinery and its operators will be well-equipped to meet the challenges ahead.
As we offer our steadfast support, we also feel it is our responsibility to share our hopes for your leadership. As the government’s representative for the cultural sector, we encourage you to consider taking the following steps in addressing key concerns that we have previously communicated to the Presidency.
i. Establish and clearly define a comprehensive framework for the culture and creative sector while empowering relevant state institutions for effective management. The existing structure have agencies duplicating roles without clarity which agency is leading and which agencies are playing supporting roles.
ii. Conduct a thorough audit of existing legislation and legal frameworks governing the culture and creative sector to ensure alignment and coherence with the established framework.
iii. Undertake consistent and comprehensive research and data collection to accurately assess the economic contributions of the culture and creative sector to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and to compile a comprehensive inventory of cultural production units across the country.
We wish you great success in your upcoming vetting process and look forward to seeing our shared vision for the development of Ghana’s culture and creative sector realized. Long live Ghana! Together, let us advance the agenda of nurturing and enhancing the cultural landscape of our beloved nation.
