Kanye West, now legally known as Ye, recently sat down with Justin Laboy on The Download to discuss his latest creative pursuits, personal reflections, and industry insights. The conversation covered a range of topics, from his appreciation for Japanese culture to his thoughts on musical rivalries.

Bully—A Personal and Artistic Statement

One of the major highlights of the interview was the announcement of his upcoming album, Bully. Ye revealed that the title was inspired by an incident involving his son, Saint, who had an aggressive encounter with a peer. The album is set for release on North West’s birthday, further reinforcing the familial ties woven into his artistic process.

In discussing the album’s production, Ye expressed a return to raw craftsmanship, stating that he intends to manually chop all samples, likening this approach to the artistry of Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Clips shown during the interview featured Ye in a creative session, donning a “Diplomats” chain, with rapper Jim Jones also present. He confirmed that longtime collaborator Mike Dean is contributing to the project, heightening anticipation for its sonic direction.

Reflections on Fatherhood and Legacy

Ye also touched on his role as a mentor to his daughter, North, sharing his excitement about her musical journey. He credited his parents for instilling a natural inclination towards teaching, which fuels his enthusiasm for guiding North in her artistic endeavours. The interview included footage of the father-daughter duo working on music together, hinting at a future project.

His Name Change and Artistic Defiance

Addressing his decision to officially change his name to Ye, he reaffirmed that true fans would refer to him by his legal name. He noted that this change is deeply personal, emphasising that he is unwavering in his identity and artistic choices.

Throughout the discussion, Ye reinforced his philosophy of creative independence. He acknowledged that he often steers his music in directions that defy public expectation, insisting that no one can dictate his artistic vision.

Industry Commentary and Kendrick vs. Drake

The interview also saw Ye commenting on industry shifts, including the financial realities of music. He remarked that profitability in the industry now hinges on having a product beyond music, referencing his ventures in fashion and footwear.

Ye further revealed that he was diagnosed with a form of autism, which he believes explains his contrarian mindset and resistance to external influence.

Perhaps the most striking moment came when he weighed in on the ongoing Kendrick Lamar–Drake rivalry. Ye declared that Kendrick had “killed” Drake musically, boldly stating that “Drake is dead for now.” He argued that the only artists capable of challenging Kendrick are those with an unmatched level of genius—placing himself in that category.

A Glimpse Into the Future

Ye’s interview offered a rare glimpse into his current state of mind, blending personal revelations with bold industry commentary. With Bully on the horizon and his continued influence across music and fashion, he remains a figure who commands attention—whether through his creative output or his unfiltered opinions.
