Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., widely known as Irv Gotti, has passed away at the age of 54. The influential music producer and co-founder of Murder Inc. Records died in New York City, though the exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Gotti had reportedly been battling diabetes and suffered a minor stroke in early 2024, which left him walking with a cane.

Born on 26 June 1970 in Hollis, Queens, Gotti was a pivotal figure in shaping the hip-hop and R&B landscape. He began his career in the 1990s, working with artists such as Jay-Z and DMX, before co-founding Murder Inc. in 1998 alongside his brother, Chris Lorenzo.

The label quickly rose to prominence, signing Ja Rule and Ashanti, who went on to dominate the early 2000s music charts with a string of hits.

Beyond his role as a producer and label executive, Gotti was also a shrewd businessman. In 2022, he made headlines after selling his master recordings for $300 million, securing his financial legacy while continuing to influence the industry.

Tributes Pour In

Since news of his passing broke, tributes have been pouring in from across the entertainment world. Ja Rule, one of Gotti’s closest collaborators, shared a simple broken heart emoji on social media, reflecting the deep sense of loss. Def Jam Recordings, the parent label of Murder Inc., released a statement recognising his contributions, saying: “His creative vision and dedication to the craft have left an indelible mark on the industry.”

Despite his health struggles in recent months, Gotti remained active in music and business, working on projects that continued to shape the industry. His vision, influence, and pioneering spirit will be remembered as an essential part of hip-hop’s history.

Gotti is survived by his three children: Angie, Sonny, and Jonathan “JJ” Wilson Gotti.
