Chief Nixon Hamilton Biney, the former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the dissolution of his marriage to the former Deputy CEO of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Afia Akoto.
On February 13, Chief Nixon Hamilton Biney, publicly known as Chief Biney, posted a video on his Facebook page, which many believed represented the traditional dissolution of his marriage to Afia Akoto.
In the video, Chief Biney is seen holding a bottle of Schnapp handed to him by a relative of Afia Akoto, an act recognised as a formal way of dissolving a marriage in the Ghanaian traditional setting.
A relative of Chief Biney, Nana Amoasi VII, came to confirm the dissolution of the marriage on his Facebook page stating “I gladly received a bottle of Schnapps as evidence of the final dissolution of the traditional marriage between my brother Chief Biney and Afia Akoto.”
The couple first made headlines in 2020, when their wedding became a symbol of political unity. Their union stood out because Chief Biney belonged to the NDC, while Afia Akoto was a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
