Popular Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, widely known as Shatta Wale, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for scrapping the 10% withholding tax on lottery winnings, commonly referred to as the “betting tax.”
The move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce the financial burden on households and businesses. As outlined in the 2025 budget, several taxes introduced by the previous administration will be abolished.
Presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament on March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that these taxes had not only failed to generate the expected revenue but had also worsened the cost of living crisis.
Reacting to the announcement in a Facebook post, Shatta Wale expressed his excitement, highlighting the relief it brings to young people.
“This is what we want to hear. Thanks to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. Now boys go fit save cash and invest,” he wrote.
