British Hollywood star Idris Elba was officially honoured as a son of the Ga land in a historic ceremony presided over by Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The event, rich in tradition and cultural significance, celebrated Elba’s deep ties to Ghana and his commitment to elevating the country’s film industry.

Dressed in local print, the actor was welcomed by Justice Naa Yaale, Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse and daughter of the late Ako Adjei—one of Ghana’s revered “Big Six” independence pioneers.

In his speech, Elba revealed bold plans to establish a 22-acre film studio and training academy near Osu Castle, designed to position Ghana as a leading hub for African filmmaking.

“One of my greatest missions has been to bring the film industry back home to Africa,” Elba declared. “This studio will not just be a production house—it will be a school, a creative incubator, and a launchpad for the next generation of African storytellers.”

His announcement was met with resounding applause from attendees, including Ghanaian film icons such as George Nii Armah, Chris Attoh, Kalsoume Sinare, and Adjetey Anang, as well as government officials and industry leaders.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II praised Elba’s initiative, emphasizing its potential to empower Ghanaian youth and preserve Ga heritage through film.

“Our youth need direction, and this project is the way forward,” the Ga Mantse stated. “By partnering with Idris Elba, we are ensuring that our stories are told by us, for the world. This is how we elevate the creative arts in Ghana.”

The ceremony featured vibrant displays of Ga drumming, dance, and traditional rites, symbolizing Elba’s formal adoption into the Ga community.

Elba’s homecoming marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s push to become a global film destination. His proposed studio—slated to include state-of-the-art production facilities and training programs—aims to create jobs, boost tourism, and amplify authentic African narratives.

With strong backing from the Ga kingdom and Ghana’s creative sector, the project signals a transformative step in reclaiming Africa’s storytelling legacy—one blockbuster at a time.
