Marriage was my worst financial decision – Michael Obeng

Renowned Ghanaian-born America-based plastic surgeon, Dr Michael K. Obeng, has revealed that his biggest financial mistake was marriage.

In an interview during a street-style profile in Beverly Hills shared by the The School Of Hard Knocks on Instagram on Monday April 7, Dr Obeng, who has become a household name in elite cosmetic surgery circles, didn’t mince words when asked about missteps on his rise to the top.

“Marriage—actually, marrying the wrong person,” he declared, calling it the most expensive mistake of his life.

Now a successful entrepreneur with a thriving private practice in Beverly Hills and annual earnings reportedly reaching $9 million, Dr Obeng has his sights set on a much bigger vision: transforming Africa’s pharmaceutical landscape.

He believes the key to sustained wealth lies in diversification—and he’s betting on building a pharmaceutical empire in Ghana.

Dr Obeng’s inspiring story stretches from growing up in the slums of Ghana to becoming one of the few Black surgeons operating in one of the world’s most exclusive ZIP codes.

“How can a kid from the slums of Ghana make it to Beverly Hills?” he asked. “We are the best plastic surgeons in the world. It’s God.”

Internationally recognized after famously removing Gorilla Glue from a woman’s hair in 2021, Dr. Obeng made his first million by age 34. But even with wealth and fame, he remains grounded in his faith, which he says has been the anchor of his journey.

To young entrepreneurs, his advice is clear: choose your life partner wisely. “If you don’t share the same faith, it’s not the right person,” he cautioned. “Without God, I wouldn’t be here… God wants us to prosper. He’s the ultimate giver of wealth.”
