Adventist SHS student’s eye injury complex, may require multiple surgeries – Ophthalmologist

Dr Asiwome Kwesi Seneadza, Medical Director of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in Accra, has described the eye injury of Suzzy Pinamang, the Form 2 student at Adventist SHS, who was hit in the eye by a stray bullet fired by her colleague as a quite complex case that may require multiple surgeries.

This followed an examination to assess the extent of the damage. He said in a video sighted by Ghana Weekend  on Monday May 5 that “The outcome is still very guarded. What it means is that the outcome is still not very sure because we’re not able to see the back of the eye, and if we are not able to see the back of the eye, we can’t just assume what is there.”

He further emphasised that the situation remains uncertain due to the inability to examine the retina thoroughly.

“It has all options that you may go and still find the retina able to see or you may find out that the retina is severely damaged,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Seneadza mentioned a few promising signs, such as the pupil’s reaction, which suggests some level of functionality.

“A few things are a bit promising because the pupil is reacting but it still doesn’t tell us enough unless we go to the back of the eye to be able assess the health of the retina.”

Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama who is funding the eye treatment is therefore arranging urgent overseas treatment for Suzzy.
