Legendary soul singer Smokey Robinson has responded through legal counsel to disturbing accusations brought by four anonymous women who worked as domestic staff at his home.
The women, referred to in court documents as Jane Does 1 through 4, allege a troubling pattern of sexual misconduct and abuse spanning over 17 years.
In a statement issued this week, Robinson’s attorneys slammed the $50 million lawsuit as a “vile shakedown” designed to exploit his celebrity status.
“These claims are completely false and transparently opportunistic,” said Christopher Frost, Robinson’s legal representative. “This is not a pursuit of justice, it is a pursuit of a payday.”
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, details allegations of sexual battery, false imprisonment, and a toxic work environment allegedly fostered by both Robinson and his wife, Frances Gladney.
The plaintiffs claim they endured years of silence due to fear, of retaliation, deportation, and humiliation.
While Robinson has not yet delivered a personal video or written statement, his legal team insists he is eager to tell his side in his own words when the time is right.
“Smokey is appalled by the accusations,” Frost added. “We are preparing a strong motion to dismiss, and we’re confident the facts will speak for themselves in court.”
The case has quickly attracted media attention, not only because of the severity of the allegations, but also due to Robinson’s pristine public image as a music pioneer and long-time humanitarian.
This is not Robinson’s first legal battle. In 2023, he won a case against a former manager who sued for unpaid commissions, receiving a fraction of the amount originally sought.
For now, both sides are bracing for a protracted legal process. Robinson’s accusers say they are seeking justice and acknowledgment. His team says they are fighting to preserve the truth, and a legacy.
