Sammy Gyamfi apologises after backlash over donation to Nana Agradaa

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has issued a public apology following intense public criticism over a recent cash donation he made to controversial evangelist and former fetish priestess, Patricia Asiama, widely known as Nana Agradaa.

In a statement posted on his social media page on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Gyamfi acknowledged the uproar sparked by a viral video showing him handing over an undisclosed amount of US dollars to Nana Agradaa at a public event.

The footage triggered widespread backlash from the public and political circles,with many questioning the appropriateness of his association with the polarising figure.

“Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours,” Gyamfi wrote. “To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.”

He explained that the donation was not intended for public consumption and expressed regret over the footage making its way into the public domain.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable,” he stated.

Addressing the concerns of political allies and the general public, Mr. Gyamfi offered a heartfelt apology:

“I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

He also expressed gratitude to those who reached out to support and advise him during the controversy.

Despite the incident, Gyamfi reaffirmed his commitment to his role at GoldBod and to national development.

“Let me state however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed,” he added.

He concluded his statement by wishing the public well and extending warm Mother’s Day greetings to mothers across the country.

The apology comes at a time when public officials are under increasing scrutiny, particularly in matters involving accountability and personal associations.
