As part of their year group project, the 1999 alumni of Accra High School has held a comprehensive health screening for students and staff.
The exercise, spearheaded by the year group, was designed to help identify early signs of common health conditions among the school community and promote a culture of proactive healthcare.
Speaking to Ghana Weekend at the event on Friday May 16, Danmaz Abdallah Abdul Aziz Maiga, President of the 1999 year group, outlined the rationale behind the initiative.
“The actual reason for this project is due to the rising concerns about illnesses, and this is a way of having a screening for students. After the screening, we can get advice from the hospital for further assessments,” he said.
The screening included tests for body mass index (BMI), hepatitis, Helicobacter pylori, fasting and random blood sugar levels, and malaria. Organisers believe the activity will help improve awareness and early detection of health risks, ensuring both students and staff receive timely medical advice and intervention.
Headmistress of the school, Mrs Evelyn Nagbia, expressed her appreciation to the group for the initiative, stating “I would like to use this medium to thank the Onukpai 1999 year group for this thoughtful activity that they are having.”
She also emphasised the benefit to staff members, noting that it offered them an opportunity to better understand and manage their own health.
“For us as staff too, it will also let us know our health status and how to handle ourselves,” she added.
