Joe Mettle considers stepping back from Telecel Ghana Music Awards

Renowned Gospel artiste, Joe Mettle,  has revealed he may soon stop submitting his works for consideration at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

The multiple award-winning singer says his decision is not because he feels above the awards scheme, but rather due to the increasing demands that come with being nominated—demands he sometimes struggles to meet due to his tight schedule.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Friday, May 16, 2025, the singer behind the hit track, ‘My Everything,’ explained that the decision to step back from nominating himself has been on his mind for some time.

“I think I do (have intentions to retire from the awards). I think for the past three or four years, I have wanted to take a seat back from the awards and it is not because I think I have outgrown the awards, no it is not that,” he clarified.

He further shared that the demands placed on nominees often clash with his busy schedule, making it difficult to give the awards process the full attention it requires.

“There are things that the award requires that sometimes you are not able to do because once you are nominated, you need to push it and sometimes there is a lot happening.

“Sometimes, it gets to a point where there is so much more going on around you that you are not able to commit to the requirement,” he said.

The gospel minister also addressed a common perception in the media that his seeming detachment from the awards is due to arrogance.

“In the media, they feel like you are acting big but it is not the case. Most of them are assumptions,” he noted.

Adding “There are seasons, a season comes and you realise that you cannot commit to the awards like you used to but it’s not like you’ve outgrown it.”
