Ghanaian Afro-fusion star Gyakie has revealed that her hit single *Sankofa* almost didn’t make it onto her upcoming album.
Speaking on The Chat with Ekow Koomson on Channel One TV on May 24, 2025, she shared that the song came from a spontaneous studio session that could have easily gone unnoticed.
“The producer played me a few beats, and the instrumental for *Sankofa* was part of it. I heard it and did a freestyle. It is so wild because it probably would not have been on the album if we hadn’t had that session,” she said.
Gyakie explained that her songwriting process is deeply influenced by the production, and the beat for *Sankofa* immediately inspired a romantic theme.
“One thing about me is that I always get my ideas for songs from the production or the beat. So, when I heard the beat, it gave me a love vibration, so I decided to talk about love,” she noted.
She also shared that the song’s inspiration struck her during a late-night session.
“Sometimes, I get shocked at the sort of lyrics that come to me. I usually write after midnight. I was listening to the beat in the studio, and that was the first time the word *Sankofa* came to mind. I’m very happy that it did,” she said with a smile.
