Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Vice Chancellor of Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), has stressed the urgent need for improved infrastructure on campus to support the university’s rapidly growing student population.
Speaking in an interview with Ghana Weekend on May 20, Professor Afoakwa revealed that since he took office in 2018, the university’s enrollment has grown significantly—from around 3,000 students to nearly 14,000.
“As you can see, the infrastructure base remains the same. Therefore, it’s quite a big challenge for us to keep all the increasing number of students in the institution while ensuring they receive quality tuition and education,” he said.
To manage this growth, the university has begun an infrastructure development project. It includes constructing two major buildings: an eight-story structure for undergraduate students, which will feature lecture halls, labs, an auditorium, and office space; and a seven-story building for the graduate school to enhance postgraduate education facilities.
Professor Afoakwa also noted that GCTU has a legal mandate to become Ghana’s leading ICT-focused university and a center of excellence for the West African region.
“We have been mandated by law to be the ICT institution for Ghana. Our goal is to not just be the best in Ghana, but to lead the entire West African sub-region,” he affirmed.
He emphasised that to achieve this mandate and stay competitive, the university must pursue several strategic initiatives, with infrastructure development being a top priority.
