Broadcaster and musician Blakk Rasta has claimed that dancehall artiste Stonebwoy spends more than GH¢2.5 million of his own money to organise BHIMFEST, despite ticket sales reportedly failing to cover the cost of the festival.
Reacting to Stonebwoy’s recent BHIMFEST concert at London’s OVO Arena Wembley in the UK, Blakk Rasta said Stonebwoy’s financial commitment to the festival demonstrates his determination to build the brand and promote Ghanaian music internationally.
“At least he spends $250,000 to bring people here. You know how much that is? More than GH¢2.5 million on every BHIMFEST that he hosts here. How many tickets is he able to sell? How many?”
Blakk Rasta said Stonebwoy’s spending extends beyond the organisation of the festival to bringing international artistes to Ghana, paying their appearance fees and taking care of their accommodation, food and other needs.
He cited Jamaican artistes including Fantan Mojah, Spice, Busy Signal and Masicka as examples of international acts Stonebwoy has brought to Ghana.
“The last time Fantan Mojah was here, he told me how much Stonebwoy paid him. I couldn’t believe it because I honestly don’t pay artistes like that for Roots Festival. I can’t even pay half of what Stonebwoy paid Fantan Mojah.
“He gave him [Fantan Mojah] a nice place to sleep, good food and other amenities. He brought Spice to this country. Busy Signal was here. He brought Masicka here.”
He further praised Stonebwoy for taking BHIMFEST to the United Kingdom, saying the artiste had taken the step largely without the backing of major sponsors or event organisers.
“Stonebwoy spent money from his own pocket. No sponsors. Nothing. No big organisers. He did it on his own in the UK. He took BHIMFEST to the UK.”
Blakk Rasta further expressed hope that Stonebwoy’s feat would inspire other Ghanaian artistes to follow, eventually enabling more Ghanaian musicians to fill major international venues.
“One day Ghanaian artistes can also go to Wembley and comfortably fill the place because somebody set the pace.”
