‘I’m the only authentic Dancehall Artiste in Ghana’ – Jupitar

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste, Michael Okine, popularly known as Jupitar, has claimed the title of Ghana’s sole authentic dancehall artiste.

During an interview on *Ekwanso Dwodwo* on Monday, June 16, he emphasised his unmatched fluency in Jamaican patois and unwavering commitment to pure dancehall, setting himself apart from industry giants like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.

“I’m the one and only authentic, you know, dancehall artiste here in Ghana, without any doubt,” Jupitar stated.

He attributed his authenticity to his strict use of Jamaican patois, avoiding the blending of local languages like Ga or Ewe, which he noted are often incorporated by Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, respectively.

“When it comes to clarity, originality, you know, and very fluent… my songs do not sound Ghanaian, so that makes me the most authentic dancehall artiste,” he added.

Jupitar, who has been a prominent figure in Ghana’s dancehall scene since 2011, explained that his deep connection to Jamaican patois sometimes leaves him surprised by his own fluency.

“I get confused sometimes when I listen to my own songs because I realize I’m too inclined with the patois,” he said, underscoring his dedication to the genre’s roots. His hit singles like “Money Box” (2012) and “Enemies” have earned him nominations and awards, including a nod at the Urban Music Awards UK for his track “Clowns.”
