Photos of a same-sex couple posing at Ghana’s Independence Arch and other iconic landmarks have ignited widespread controversy on social media.
The images, shared as part of the #ShowGhanaLove campaign by South African couple Lue and Rue, were intended as a protest against Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ bill.
However, many Ghanaians have condemned the move, calling it disrespectful to national symbols that represent the country’s pride, freedom, and heritage—especially in a society where same-sex relationships remain largely opposed.
The controversy deepened when Kofi Okyere Darko, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, briefly posted one of the images on facebook with the caption: “Who are they? Do your thing but not beneath our independence monument.”
The post was later deleted but has fueled growing national conversation around LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of expression, and the boundaries of protest.
