A horrifying act of domestic violence has left California’s fitness and social media communities in mourning after Gloria Zamora, a beloved fitness influencer and mother, was fatally shot in a sushi restaurant parking lot—just days after taking a public stand against her estranged husband.
The 40-year-old was dining with Hector Garduno, 43, a friend and prospective business partner, on the evening of Saturday, June 21, in Fontana, a city outside Los Angeles. The two were reportedly discussing plans to launch a women-focused gym, a project aligned with Zamora’s mission to uplift and empower women.
But their meeting ended in violence.
According to Fontana Police, Zamora’s estranged husband, Tomas Alberto Tamayo Lizarraga, arrived in the parking lot, approached the couple, and opened fire at point-blank range, killing both Zamora and Garduno. Investigators believe Lizarraga deliberately tracked her location, though it remains unclear how he discovered where she was.
> “We don’t know how he knew where she was, but apparently, she had been at the restaurant for approximately an hour prior to the shooting,” said Fontana Police Officer Steve Reed, speaking to ABC7.
At the heart of the tragedy, police say, was one word: divorce. Gloria and Lizarraga were in the middle of a separation, and she had recently made moves toward reclaiming her independence.
It was a decision that may have tragically sealed her fate.
Law Enforcement Intervenes — Too Late to Save Two Lives
Several off-duty law enforcement officers happened to be nearby during the shooting. One, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy, was driving past the plaza when gunfire erupted.
> “He heard the gunshots, saw what had happened, made a U-turn at the light, and got out of his vehicle and confronted the suspect,” said Officer Reed. The deputy then fatally shot Lizarraga at the scene, preventing further harm.
Despite his quick action, Zamora and Garduno had already succumbed to their injuries.

With over 150,000 Instagram followers, Gloria Zamora was a beacon of strength, health, and female empowerment. She used her platform to encourage confidence, self-worth, and the importance of wellness, especially for women balancing motherhood, self-care, and business.
In one viral clip, now replayed with heartbreak across social media, she declared:
> “When somebody wants to test me, don’t challenge me, because I’m going to prove you wrong.”
What once sounded like a declaration of resilience now echoes as a chilling foreshadowing of the violence that would follow.
Eleven Children Now Without Their Parents
Zamora was the mother of seven children, ranging in age from 8 to 24. Garduno, a father of four daughters, also leaves behind a grieving family. In total, eleven children have been left without one of their parents following this senseless act.
Family members have since spoken out, calling for awareness of domestic abuse warning signs and demanding that society do more to protect those trying to leave dangerous relationships.
A Preventable Loss?
As tributes continue to pour in for Zamora and Garduno, many in the public and legal community are questioning how this could have been prevented. The case shines a spotlight on the ongoing risks faced by survivors of intimate partner violence—even those with fame, resources, and support.
