The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the government is actively engaging with TikTok to address the spread of harmful content on the platform and safeguard Ghanaian cultural values.
Speaking at a press briefing held on July 3, 2025, he emphasised the urgent need for digital platforms to be more accountable, especially as social media continues to play an influential role in shaping public discourse and youth behavior.
“We are working with TikTok to ensure that harmful content is taken down promptly. This is not about censorship; it’s about protecting our culture, values, and the mental well-being of our young people,” he stated.
According to him, discussions with TikTok’s regional representatives are ongoing, with a focus on implementing stronger content moderation policies tailored to Ghana’s unique social and cultural context.
“This is not an attack on freedom of expression,” he reiterated. “It is a call for responsibility. We must protect our digital space without compromising our fundamental rights.”
The government’s partnership with TikTok marks a step forward in efforts to balance digital innovation with cultural preservation and public safety.
