The Ghana Police Service has interdicted an officer who was captured in a viral video assaulting a journalist during the ongoing parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.
In an official press release signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs, the Service confirmed it had taken immediate action after reviewing the footage circulating on social media.
“The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North; and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement read.
The Police Service assured the public of a comprehensive and impartial investigation, adding that further updates would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
The incident, which took place at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling 2 Station, has sparked public outrage and reignited debates over media freedom and police conduct during elections.
The journalist involved, from GHOne TV, had earlier stated that he felt targeted and physically attacked by the officer while performing his duties.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
