Election Watch Ghana has praised the residents of Ablekuma North for their commendable participation in the parliamentary by-election held across 19 polling stations. The civil society organization highlighted the voters’ turnout as a positive sign of democratic maturity.

“Election Watch Ghana commends the good people of Ablekuma North for exercising their civic duty and participating in the ongoing by-election… This demonstrates the growth and maturity of our democracy,” the statement read.

However, the group expressed serious concern over the violent incidents that disrupted the process, citing the use of pepper spray and physical assaults by some politicians and their supporters.

“The use of pepper spray and physical assault… is unacceptable and undermines the credibility of the electoral process. We condemn these acts of violence and urge all parties to respect the rule of law and promote a peaceful and credible electoral process.”

Election Watch Ghana also commended Defense Minister for refusing to deploy the military despite chaos and violence at several polling centers. The organization applauded the decision as a strong reaffirmation of democratic values.

“We commend the Defense Minister for standing by his word not to involve the military in the electoral process… This decision reflects a commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the electoral process remains peaceful and credible.”

In response to the unrest, the group urged the Inspector General of Police to deploy additional security personnel and intelligence resources to the collation centre. They emphasized the need to protect journalists, electoral officials, and party agents.

“We are particularly concerned about the safety of journalists and electoral officials… We urge the Ghana Police Service to take all necessary measures to protect these individuals and ensure that they can carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or harm.”

The statement, co-signed by conveners Mark Ewusi Arkoh and Jude Balma, concluded by calling on all stakeholders—security agencies, political parties, and citizens—to collaborate in securing a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral outcome.

Election Watch Ghana added that it will continue monitoring the by-election and reporting on any incidents or irregularities as the process unfolds.
