The Christ Church Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, located in Akropong Akuapem under the Akuapem Presbytery, has marked its 190th anniversary with a vibrant celebration featuring a food bazaar, games, exhibitions, and a cooking competition.

Established in 1845 by missionary Andreas Riis, the church has grown steadily over the years, spreading its influence across the nation.

As part of the anniversary activities, the church hosted an exciting cooking competition and food bazaar, with various departments showcasing a wide array of rich and nutritious local cuisines.

Participating groups included the Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship, Young Adults Fellowship, Young People’s Guild, Children’s Fellowship, Singing Band, Church Choir, Christo Nsrafo, and the Bible Study and Prayer Group.

Speaking to Ghana Weekend, Rev. Alex Owusu Addo, District Minister in charge of Christ Church, emphasised the importance of preserving Ghana’s traditional dishes and called on the government to support local farmers.

“It is very necessary that we preserve our local dishes for future generations. Over the years, our indigenous meals have proven to be highly nutritious and healthy. Our forefathers, who lived long and healthy lives, thrived on these foods, so it’s important we continue to promote them and reduce our dependence on foreign alternatives.”

Rev. Addo further urged government intervention in the agricultural sector:

“The government can contribute to preservation efforts by empowering local farmers, reducing the cost of farming inputs, and ensuring they are easily accessible. Agriculture remains the backbone of our economy, and it’s crucial that we make a conscious effort to support our local farmers.”

The 190th anniversary celebration served not only as a reflection on the church’s historical journey but also as a call to preserve cultural heritage through food and community engagement.
