Daddy Lumba’s notable beefs: When the legend drew his sword

For over three decades, Daddy Lumba ruled Ghana’s music scene with unmatched charisma, lyrical brilliance, and an enviable catalogue. But behind the smooth voice and soulful love songs was a man who didn’t shy away from controversy. Throughout his career, Lumba found himself at the center of several high-profile rivalries and creative clashes some personal, others musical but all undeniably iconic.

Here’s a look at some of Daddy Lumba’s most notable beefs and how they shaped his legacy:

1. Daddy Lumba vs. Nana Acheampong (Lumba Brothers Split)

Background: Daddy Lumba and Nana Acheampong formed the legendary Lumba Brothers in the late ’80s and released their debut album Yereye Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989. The duo’s chemistry was electric, blending harmonies and highlife in ways Ghana had never seen.

The Fallout: Shortly after their breakthrough, the group split a move fans never quite recovered from. Though both men pursued successful solo careers, rumours of betrayal, ego clashes, and creative differences lingered. Lumba’s solo rise arguably eclipsed Nana Acheampong’s, fueling speculation about underlying tension.

Impact: Their separation marked the end of one of Ghana’s most iconic duos. Yet, neither officially dissed the other in public; their silence spoke volumes.

2. Daddy Lumba vs. Ofori Amponsah

Background: In the late ’90s, Daddy Lumba helped launch Ofori Amponsah’s career, featuring him on the Woho Kyere album. Ofori was seen as Lumba’s protégé, a spiritual and musical son.

The Rift: After Ofori’s solo success, particularly with hits like Otoolege, he allegedly distanced himself from Lumba. Some insiders claim Lumba felt undermined or unacknowledged for his mentorship.

Indirect Jabs: Fans noted lyrical jabs in songs from both camps subtle, never explicit including perceived subliminals on Lumba’s Poison and Ofori’s Odwo.

Impact: The feud fizzled out over the years, but it remains one of the most talked-about “father-son” splits in Ghanaian music.

3. Daddy Lumba vs. Great Ampong

Background: In 2015, Daddy Lumba teamed up with gospel musician Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong (Great Ampong) to release the Hosanna album.

The Beef: Shortly after the album’s release, Ampong accused Lumba of financial dishonesty, claiming he ran off with album proceeds without proper accounting. Ampong went public, accusing Lumba of betrayal and exploitation.

Lumba’s Response: Lumba remained largely silent, only releasing a 2022 song “Ofon Na Ɔdi Asɛm Fo,” which many interpreted as a clapback to Ampong. The track’s title translates loosely as “foolish people talk nonsense,” fueling speculation.

Ampong’s Counter: Ampong later released a song titled “Onyame Akatua II,” which many took as his response, furthering the gospel vs. highlife cold war.

Impact: This feud caused a major stir due to the gospel-highlife dynamic and allegations of greed. It damaged any hope of future collaborations and divided fan bases.

4. Daddy Lumba vs. Kojo Antwi (Alleged Silent Rivalry)

Background: Though never confirmed, a long-standing rivalry between Lumba and fellow highlife legend Kojo Antwi has always been speculated. Both artists dominated the same era with similar fan bases and artistic appeal.

Tension: Fans often debated who was greater Lumba or Antwi fueling indirect competition. They never collaborated, and each stayed in his lane despite similar styles.

Public Statements: Neither artist has directly addressed a feud, but industry insiders believe pride and brand identity kept them apart.

Impact: Even without a public spat, the silent rivalry elevated both men’s game and enriched Ghana’s highlife tradition with parallel greatness.

 Final Thoughts:

Beefs, whether real or perceived, have always added spice to Daddy Lumba’s musical journey. But unlike today’s social-media-driven feuds, Lumba’s style was coded, calculated, and charismatic. He let the music do the talking, using his lyrics as subtle weapons rather than overt attacks.

Through it all, his name never faded proving that controversy may stir the crowd, but only brilliance keeps them dancing.
