The Chief of Tarkwa in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, Nana Atta Kwakwa Egyir Opusu VII has established an educational fund to support people in his community.
The chief who announced this to Ghana Weekend during the ongoing Akwambo Festival said the action was inspired by the struggles of parents to further their wards’ education beyond the secondary level due to unfavourable financial conditions.
“The people here are mainly peasant farmers and most of them are unable to further their children’s education beyond JHS and SHS that is why I have set up this fund to support them,” he said.
Adding “I am therefore appealing to everyone especially those from this community to come and support.”
Among other interventions being done by the chief is the building of a police station and barracks for the community.
He is also taking initiative to control teenage pregnancy which is rampant in the area.
Nana Opusu VII, a deputy commissioner of police was enstooled as chief of the community last year.
The Akwambo festival which signifies the journey of ancestors of the Gomoa people to their present location is celebrated annually to foster unity and also promote development.
