Thousands of Ghanaians have gathered at the Independence Square in Accra on Saturday night, August 2, to honour the memory of legendary highlife musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, in a solemn candlelight vigil.

The emotionally charged event drew fans, musicians, dignitaries, and admirers from across the country, united in celebration of Lumba’s life and unparalleled contribution to Ghanaian music and culture.

Organised by a group of music lovers and industry stakeholders, the vigil featured live band performances of some of Lumba’s timeless hits, poetry recitals, and heartfelt tributes from both fans and colleagues.

Wearing black and holding flickering candles, the crowd sang along to Lumba’s classics, turning Independence Square into a sea of lights and song, a powerful tribute to a man many consider the soul of highlife.

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) speaking live from the event on the Channel One Newsroom, Bessa Simons, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming turnout and support.

“I am really moved. We have Lumba’s family here. The crowd behind us and the lovers, people who are here, I am so humbled that we have people here to have this day. I know it is going to be better and better. We have reps from the Jubilee House and reps from the Ga Traditional Council,” he told Channel One News.

Veteran singer and songwriter, Pat Thomas also paid tribute to Lumba’s enduring influence, stating “His legacy will be there and will be protected always. I believe that.”
