The Creative Arts Agency has indefinitely postponed the Kumasi edition of a candlelight vigil in honour of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, originally scheduled for Saturday, 9th August 2025.

This decision was announced in a press statement dated 7th August, 2025 and signed by the acting Executive Secretary of the Agency, Gideon Aryeequaye.

It comes in the wake of a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who has declared three days of national mourning from 7 to 9th August 2025, following a fatal helicopter crash in Adansi.

Eight Ghanaians lost their lives in the crash on 6th August 2025. The deceased include Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Others were NDC Vice Chairman and former Kumasi mayor, Dr Samuel Sarpong, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Mr Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The government, security services and the general public have been mourning the tragic loss.

According to the Creative Arts Agency, the vigil was postponed “in memory of the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash.”

The statement added that a new date for the event will be announced in due course.

The planned Kumasi vigil followed a successful edition held in Accra on Saturday, 2nd August 2025. The event in the capital drew hundreds of fans, fellow musicians and dignitaries who gathered to pay tribute to one of Ghana’s most influential musicians.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, died on 26th July 2025 after a short illness. He was 60.

The Creative Arts Agency extended its condolences to the families of the helicopter crash victims and to the entire nation.
