Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg has set off a wave of online debate after admitting he felt uncomfortable watching Pixar’s Lightyear with his grandson, citing the film’s inclusion of a lesbian couple.
Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, the 53-year-old rapper revealed that his grandson’s innocent question left him stunned. “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!” the child asked during the screening.

Snoop confessed that he had no ready answer. “I didn’t come here for this. I just came to watch the goddamn movie. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of stuff that I don’t have an answer for,” he explained, adding that he tried to dodge the awkward moment by telling his grandson to focus on his popcorn.
The comments immediately drew backlash, with critics labeling them as insensitive and homophobic. Many argued that introducing diverse family dynamics in children’s films is important, as it reflects the real world and helps young audiences understand inclusivity from an early age.
Supporters of Snoop, however, countered that parents and guardians should have more control over how and when children are exposed to such conversations. Some sympathised with his sentiment, saying his reaction highlights the generational gap in discussing LGBTQ+ issues with younger audiences.
The Lightyear controversy is not new—when the film premiered in 2022, its same-sex kiss drew both praise for representation and criticism from conservative circles. Snoop’s recent remarks have reignited the debate, this time amplified by his high-profile status and influence.
The timing also places the rapper under extra scrutiny, as he is slated to perform at this year’s AFL Grand Final in Australia. Some advocacy groups have questioned whether his comments align with the league’s diversity and inclusion values.
Whether viewed as a candid moment of generational discomfort or an example of resistance to change, Snoop Dogg’s words have sparked a broader cultural conversation—one that extends far beyond the cinema.
