Ghanaians gathered in large numbers at the Independence Square, Accra today, Saturday August 30, to mark the one-week observance of the passing of legendary highlife musician, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The solemn yet celebratory event formed part of the funeral arrangements laid out by the late musician’s family, following his death on Friday, July 26, 2025, after a short illness. He passed at the Bank Hospital in Accra.

The one-week observance brought together family members, friends, industry colleagues, and thousands of fans who turned up to pay tribute to the iconic figure whose music spanned more than three decades. Dressed in mourning colours, many shared emotional testimonies about how Daddy Lumba’s songs had shaped their personal lives and Ghana’s musical heritage.

This event follows an emotional candlelight vigil held on August 2 at Independence Square, where fans held candles and sang along to Lumba’s timeless classics, including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Odo Asem.

Born in 1964, Daddy Lumba rose to prominence in the 1980s and went on to become one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians. With over 30 albums to his name, he is credited with revolutionizing modern highlife music through his unique blend of traditional rhythms, love-centered lyrics, and unforgettable melodies.

While the final funeral rites will take place in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, the family has assured the public that full details of the burial arrangements will be announced in due course.

As the nation continues to mourn, tributes from musicians, political figures, and fans at home and abroad have continued to pour in, celebrating the life and legacy of an artist many regard as a national treasure.
