Azumah Resources denies E&P takeover claims

Azumah Resources Ghana Limited has denied recent reports alleging that Engineers & Planners (E&P) has taken control of its key mining projects, the Black Volta and Sankofa Gold Projects.

This comes on the back of an earlier report that indigenous mining firm Engineers & Planners (E&P) acquired Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd and Upwest Resources Ghana Ltd, taking full control of the long-stalled Black Volta and Sankofa gold concessions in the Upper West Region.

However, in a statement on Monday, September 8, 2025, Azumah Resources clarified that no legal transfer of ownership or control had occurred and labelled the claims as “false and without any legal basis.”

The company emphasised that it remains the lawful owner and operator of the projects, with no shares transferred to E&P by Azumah Ghana, Upwest Resources, or any of their shareholders.

The statement follows recent developments where E&P reportedly abandoned its legal claims against Azumah, a move hailed by Ghanaian media as a turning point that allowed Azumah Ghana to move ahead with its mining projects.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, had also cited the resolution as a testament to Ghana’s rule of law during a major international mining conference in Australia.

However, Azumah Resources Ghana Limited criticised E&P for allegedly defying that resolution and attempting to seize the mine without any legal justification.

“This undermines the Minister’s assurances and casts significant doubt on Ghana’s ability to guarantee the rule of law,” the company stated.

Azumah warned that any unauthorised transfer would amount to an expropriation of private property, potentially exposing Ghana to international arbitration and financial claims exceeding US$1 billion. The company plans to escalate the matter to the International Court of Arbitration to protect its rights and those of its shareholders and the Ghanaian public.

Prof. Prince Amponsah, Chairman of Azumah Ghana, described the takeover claims as “false information designed to confuse the public,” and alleged that they were part of a broader campaign by E&P to mislead stakeholders.

“Only last week E&P abandoned its claims against us… Any suggestion to the contrary is baseless,” he stated.

Azumah reaffirmed its commitment to developing the Wa, Black Volta, and Sankofa projects in partnership with local communities and contractors. The projects are expected to generate over US$100 million in investment, 1,000 construction jobs, and 420 permanent roles, significantly boosting economic development in Ghana’s Upper West Region.
